Short answer: ChatGPT ads are sponsored listings that appear below ChatGPT’s answers. OpenAI launched them in the United Kingdom in August 2026, and UK businesses can now buy them through OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager. The ads are shown to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, are matched to the topic of the conversation rather than to exact keywords, and can be bought per click or per thousand views.
This guide explains how ChatGPT ads work, what they cost, which businesses can and cannot advertise, and how they compare with Google Ads. We checked every fact against OpenAI’s own help pages on 21 October 2026. ChatGPT ads are still described by OpenAI as a beta, so the details can change.
What are ChatGPT ads?
ChatGPT ads are paid placements inside ChatGPT, the AI assistant made by OpenAI. When someone asks ChatGPT a question, the answer comes first. If there is a relevant advertiser, a sponsored card can appear underneath the answer.
According to OpenAI’s help pages, each ad includes:
- the advertiser’s name
- a small logo (favicon)
- a headline
- a short description
- an image
- a link to a landing page
OpenAI says ads are clearly labelled as sponsored, are kept visually separate from the answer, and do not change what ChatGPT says. Advertisers do not see people’s chats. They only receive performance figures such as views and clicks.
Are ChatGPT ads available in the UK?
Yes. OpenAI started testing ads in the United States on 9 February 2026. In an update on 11 August 2026, OpenAI said ChatGPT ads had launched in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
To use the self-serve Ads Manager, the business that advertises and pays must be based in a country on OpenAI’s availability list. When we checked on 21 October 2026, the United Kingdom was listed as available.
Who sees the ads?
Ads appear for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI says:
- people on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans do not see ads
- accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 do not see ads
- ads are not placed next to sensitive conversations, such as personal health, mental health or politics
This matters for planning. Your ads will reach a part of ChatGPT’s audience, not all of it.
How do ChatGPT ads work?
ChatGPT ads use an auction, a little like Google Ads. The big difference is how an ad is matched to a person.
- You create a campaign in Ads Manager. You choose an objective, set a budget and a maximum bid.
- You add context hints. These describe the topics, conversations or keywords where your product is relevant. OpenAI is clear that they are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee your ad will show.
- Someone has a conversation in ChatGPT. OpenAI’s system looks at the topic and intent of the conversation, your landing page, your headline and copy, your context hints and, when the user allows it, signals from their wider ChatGPT use.
- An auction picks the ad. OpenAI describes this as a “relevance-weighted, second-price auction”. In plain terms, a well-matched ad can beat a higher bid, and the winner usually pays just enough to beat the next ad.
- The ad shows below the answer. You pay when it is viewed or clicked, depending on how you bought it.
OpenAI’s help pages also say personalized ads are not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland. Check the current settings for UK campaigns in Ads Manager before you plan any audience targeting.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
There is no fixed price. You set your own budget and bids, and the auction decides what you pay. OpenAI offers three ways to buy:
| Objective | You pay for | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Views (CPM) | Every 1,000 times your ad is shown | Getting your brand seen |
| Clicks (CPC) | Each valid click to your website | Sending visitors to a landing page |
| Conversions | Each valid click, with delivery aimed at people likely to take an action you track | Leads and sales, once tracking is set up |
For click campaigns, OpenAI’s help page recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 USD per click (checked 21 October 2026). That is OpenAI’s suggested starting point, not a typical cost. We do not yet have enough UK campaign data to quote an average, so treat your first month as a test.
ChatGPT ads vs Google Ads
Most UK businesses that try ChatGPT ads will already know Google Ads. Here is how the two compare today.
| ChatGPT ads | Google Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Where ads show | Below ChatGPT answers | Google Search, Maps, YouTube, Gmail and partner sites |
| How ads are matched | Conversation topic, landing page, ad copy and context hints | Keywords, audiences and placements you choose |
| Exact keywords | No, hints only | Yes, with match types |
| Ways to pay | Views (CPM), clicks (CPC), conversion-optimized clicks | Mostly per click, plus views and other options |
| Who sees them | Logged-in adults on Free and Go plans | Almost everyone who uses Google |
| How mature it is | Beta, launched in the UK in August 2026 | Running for many years, with detailed tools |
| Data you get | Views, clicks and conversions you track | Search terms, audiences, conversions and much more |
The short version: Google Ads catches people who already know what they want and type it into Google. ChatGPT ads reach people while they are thinking a problem through with an AI assistant. Many businesses will use Google Ads as their main channel and test ChatGPT ads alongside it. If you want to understand the Google side first, read our guide to how Google Ads works. Our guide to Google Ads costs in the UK follows on 10 November.
Which businesses can advertise on ChatGPT?
Not every business can. OpenAI’s advertising policies say:
- political advertising is not allowed
- adult content, dating, gambling, alcohol and tobacco ads are not allowed at present
- health, financial and legal services are restricted and reviewed case by case, and health services ads outside the US are generally not allowed
- every ad must follow OpenAI’s usage policies
If you are a dentist, clinic, solicitor or financial adviser, check OpenAI’s current policies before you plan a campaign. For most other businesses, such as trades, retailers, software firms, hospitality and professional services outside regulated areas, the door is open.
UK advertising rules still apply
An ad shown to people in the UK must still follow the UK advertising codes. The Advertising Standards Authority has said that using automated or AI tools does not move responsibility away from the advertiser. Read the ASA’s guide, AI and deepfakes: four things advertisers need to know, before you write your first ad.
Should your business test ChatGPT ads?
ChatGPT ads are worth a small, careful test if most of these are true:
- People research your type of product or service by asking questions, for example “what is the best way to…” or “which is better…”.
- You have a clear landing page that answers the question your ad is matched to.
- You can track enquiries or sales from your website.
- Your business is not in a restricted category.
- You can set aside a test budget you are comfortable spending to learn.
It is probably too early if you have no conversion tracking, your Google Ads account is not working well yet, or your customers mostly search for urgent local services such as “emergency plumber near me”. For urgent local searches, Google is still where most people go first.
How to set up a first ChatGPT ads test
- Pick one product or service. Choose something people ask questions about.
- Write context hints in plain words. Describe the problems your customer is trying to solve, not just product names.
- Build or improve the landing page. It should answer the question quickly and make the next step obvious.
- Add tracking. OpenAI lets you add UTM parameters to your landing page links, so the visits show up in Google Analytics.
- Start with the Clicks objective. Use a modest maximum bid and a fixed test budget.
- Run it for long enough. Give it a few weeks before you judge it, then compare cost per enquiry with your other channels.
- Keep notes. Record what you changed and when. This is a new platform, so your own data is the most useful data you will have.

How ChatGPT ads fit with AI search
Ads are only one way to appear in ChatGPT. When ChatGPT searches the web, it can also mention and link to businesses in its answers without anyone paying. That organic visibility comes from the same things that help you rank on Google: clear, helpful pages, a strong reputation and accurate information about your business. Our guide to AI SEO explains how to improve it, and our AI SEO service can do the work for you.
Frequently asked questions
Are ChatGPT ads live in the UK?
Yes. OpenAI said on 11 August 2026 that ChatGPT ads had launched in the United Kingdom. UK businesses can sign up through OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager, which listed the UK as available when we checked on 21 October 2026.
Why am I seeing ads in ChatGPT, and how do I stop them?

Do ads change ChatGPT’s answers?
OpenAI says no. It states that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, that ads are labelled as sponsored and shown separately, and that advertisers never receive people’s chats.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
You set your own budget and bids, and an auction decides the final price. You can pay per 1,000 views or per click. For click campaigns, OpenAI suggests starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 USD per click. There is no published UK average yet.
